Ambassador Ernesto “Manong Ernie” Maceda, 81
The Global Filipino Editorial Board would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ernesto Maceda – lawyer, teacher, media man, legislator, and diplomat.
Ernesto Maceda is a global Filipino. Right after graduating from the Ateneo de Manila University Law School with honors for his law degree, he proceeded to the United States and took his Master of Laws degree at Harvard University in Massachusetts. After finishing his studies at the prestigious global university, he went back to the motherland and served at the City of Manila as councilor at age 23. From then on, he has continued in politics and has served the cabinet and the Philippine Congress as Senate President, bringing his understanding of his own people and his acquired knowledge of the global standards into the executive and legislative table.
Apart from his local government service, Ernesto Maceda, as a cabinet member, was instrumental in strengthening trade relations with socialist countries in Europe during the administration of former President Ferdinand Marcos. More importantly, as he retired from congressional life spanning for almost three decades, he served as the Philippine Ambassador to United States during the administration of former President Joseph Estrada.
As a diplomat, he is remembered by the people as a consummate ambassador, and as a Filipino nation overseas in search of inspiring beacons of Filipino competence, Ernesto Maceda is a global Filipino.
